Golly merchandise undergoes a design phase before they are produced for Robertsons. This is where ideas and samples are produced and sent for approval. Before the days of Computer Aided Design this took the form of hand drawn sketches. As you would imagine these unique items are particularly scarce and rarely make their way into collectors hands. Although examples still exist of the very earliest designs proposed for the first badges by Miller.
The image above shows the original artwork for the stuffed Golly Santa figure poking out of Mincemeat jar which was issued in 1981 (checklist item number G20b). You will notice that the issued design shown below has a number alterations from the original artwork.
Details and illustrations of the early original artwork by Miller can be found in the official Robertsons Golly Guide - available from www.gollychecklist.co.uk.
